1Guidelines for Publication
- Publication of an article in a peer reviewed journal is an important building block in the development of knowledge. It should reflect the quality of the work of the authors and of their institutions.
- Every manuscript is judged on its scholarly merit through the Peer Review Process of the journal.
- Advertising, sponsorship, and other commercial revenue must never influence editorial decisions.
2Duties of Authors
| Duty | What is expected |
|---|---|
| Reporting standards | Authors must present an accurate account of the research and an objective discussion of its significance. The manuscript must contain enough detail and references for others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements are unethical and unacceptable. |
| Data access and retention | Authors should provide the raw data of the study when the editors ask for it. Where practicable, they should make the data publicly available, and they should keep the data for a reasonable period. The data of participants must be kept confidential. See the Data Sharing Policy. |
| Originality and plagiarism | Authors must submit only entirely original work, and they must cite or quote the work of others clearly and correctly. Plagiarism in any form, including incorrect or misleading citation, is unacceptable. See the Plagiarism Policy. |
| Duplicate, redundant, and concurrent submission | Authors should not publish manuscripts that describe essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time is unethical. |
| Acknowledgement of sources | Authors must give proper credit to the work of others, and they must cite the publications that influenced their study. |
| Authorship of the paper | Authorship is limited to those who made a significant contribution. Others who contributed substantively are acknowledged. The corresponding author must make sure that all coauthors are included, that no inappropriate person is listed, and that all authors have approved the final version. See Authorship and Contributorship. |
| Research with human participants | Authors must obtain permission from the institution and the informed consent of the participants, and the consent of a parent or guardian for minors. The identity of participants must be protected. Describe the permission and the consent in the Method section of the article. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | Authors must disclose any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might influence the results or their interpretation, and they must state all sources of funding. See Conflicts of Interest. |
| Generative AI | Authors must follow the Generative AI Policies of the journal. An AI system cannot be listed as an author. |
| Errors in published work | When authors find a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, they must tell the editor or the publisher promptly and cooperate to retract or correct the article. |
3Duties of Editors
These duties apply to the Editor in Chief and to the members of the editorial board.
| Duty | What is expected |
|---|---|
| Publication decisions | The editors decide which of the submitted manuscripts are published. The decision is based on the validity of the work and its importance to researchers and readers. The editors are guided by the policies of the journal and by the legal requirements on defamation, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. They may consult other editors or reviewers when they decide. |
| Fair review | Manuscripts are evaluated for their intellectual content only. The race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, or political philosophy of the authors must have no influence on the decision. |
| Reviewers and guidelines | The editors make the author guidelines easy to find, choose reviewers who are suitable for each manuscript, and explain to the reviewers what is expected of them. The process is described on the Peer Review Process page. |
| Confidentiality | The editors and the editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, the reviewers, the potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | An editor must not use unpublished material from a submitted manuscript in his or her own research without the written consent of the author. An editor must not handle a manuscript in which he or she has a conflict of interest. |
4Duties of Reviewers
| Duty | What is expected |
|---|---|
| Contribution to editorial decisions | Peer review helps the editors to make decisions, and the editorial communication with the authors can help the authors to improve their manuscripts. Reviewers should offer constructive suggestions for improvement. |
| Promptness | An invited reviewer must say whether he or she is available. A reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research, or who knows that a prompt review will be impossible, must notify the editors and decline the invitation. Reviews must be completed within the time agreed with the editorial office. |
| Confidentiality | Every manuscript is a confidential document. It must not be shown to, or discussed with, anyone else unless the editors have given permission. |
| Standards of objectivity | Reviews must be objective, honest, and independent. Personal criticism of the authors is not acceptable. Reviewers must state their views clearly and support them with arguments. |
| Acknowledgement of sources | Reviewers should check the references and point out relevant published work that the authors did not cite. A reviewer must also tell the editors about any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript and other published work that he or she knows. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | Privileged information or ideas obtained through the review must be kept confidential and must not be used for personal advantage. A reviewer must decline to review a manuscript in which he or she has a conflict of interest. |
