Abstract

General anesthesia is a reversible state of unconsciousness induced by anesthetic drugs while maintaining essential physiological functions. Propofol is one of the most commonly used intravenous induction agents and is known to cause hemodynamic changes, particularly a decrease in blood pressure during induction. This study aimed to describe the hemodynamic changes after induction with propofol in patients undergoing general anesthesia at RSU Cut Meutia Lhokseumawe. This study used a quantitative observational analytic design with a pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 51 patients who underwent general anesthesia and received propofol 2 mg/kgBW, selected using consecutive sampling. Data were collected through medical records and direct observation of blood pressure, pulse rate, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) before anesthesia and three minutes after propofol induction. The results showed that most patients were aged 17–25 years, female, and classified as ASA I. Before anesthesia, blood pressure was most frequently categorized as hypertension, while pulse rate and MAP were predominantly within the normal category. Three minutes after propofol induction, blood pressure, pulse rate, and MAP showed significant changes compared with pre-anesthesia measurements (p<0.001). After induction, 11 patients (21.6%) experienced hypotension, 13 patients (25.5%) experienced bradycardia, and 21 patients (41.2%) had low MAP. These findings indicate that propofol induction was associated with significant hemodynamic changes during the early post-induction period. Continuous hemodynamic monitoring is therefore needed before and after propofol induction to facilitate early detection and management of hemodynamic changes.
