1Ethical Guideline for Journal Publication
The publication of an article in a peer reviewed journal is an essential part of a respected network of knowledge. It reflects the quality of the work of the authors and of the institutions that support them. In a journal of community service, it also reflects the way in which the authors have treated their partners and the communities with whom they worked. Peer reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method, and for this reason it is important to agree upon standards of expected ethical behavior for every party involved.
The publisher takes its responsibilities seriously. It makes sure that advertising or commercial revenue has no influence on editorial decisions, and it helps with communication with other journals and publishers where this is useful.
2Duties of Authors
| Topic | Duty |
|---|---|
| Reporting standards | Authors report original work, such as the results of a community service activity, accurately and honestly. They discuss the significance of the work objectively. The underlying data are represented accurately, and the paper contains enough detail and references to allow others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable. |
| Data access and retention | Authors provide the raw data that relate to the manuscript for editorial review when they are asked to do so. Where practicable, they make the data publicly available in line with the Data Sharing Policy, they keep the data for a reasonable period after publication, and they keep the personal data of participants confidential. |
| Originality and plagiarism | Authors submit only entirely original work, and they cite or quote the work of others appropriately. Plagiarism in all its forms, including incorrect or misattributed citations, is unethical and unacceptable. Please see the Plagiarism Policy. |
| Multiple, redundant, or concurrent publication | Authors do not publish manuscripts that describe essentially the same activity in more than one journal, and they do not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time. Both are unethical and unacceptable. |
| Acknowledgement of sources | Authors give proper credit to the work of others. They cite the publications that influenced the activity and the manuscript. |
| Authorship | Authorship is limited to those who made a significant contribution to the conception, the design, the implementation, or the interpretation of the activity. The corresponding author makes sure that all appropriate coauthors are included and that no inappropriate person is listed, and that all coauthors have approved the final version and agreed to its submission. Please see Authorship and Contributorship. |
| Activities that involve partners and participants | Authors obtain the permission of the institution or the partner organization and the informed consent of the people who take part. Participants who are minors also need the consent of a parent or a guardian. Authors protect the identity and the privacy of participants and partners, and photographs in which a person can be recognized are included only with the consent of that person. The Implementation and Method section of the manuscript states how permission and consent were obtained. |
| Hazards | If the activity involves chemicals, procedures, equipment, or conditions that carry an unusual hazard for people, animals, or the environment, the authors identify this clearly in the manuscript. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | Authors disclose any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might influence the results or their interpretation, and they state all sources of financial support for the activity. Please see the Conflicts of Interest policy. |
| Generative AI | Authors follow the Generative AI Policies of the journal. An artificial intelligence tool cannot be listed as an author. |
| Fundamental errors in published work | When authors discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work, they promptly notify the editor or the publisher and cooperate with them to retract the paper or to publish a correction. |
3Duties of Editors
| Topic | Duty |
|---|---|
| Publication decisions | The editors decide whether to accept a manuscript, to ask for revisions, or to reject it, on the basis of the review and the policies of the Editorial Board. The decision rests on the validity of the work and its importance to researchers and readers, and the review is thorough, transparent, objective, and fair. Editors are responsible for everything that they publish. They are guided by the legal requirements on libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism, and they may consult other editors or reviewers. |
| Guidelines and review process | Editors make the guidelines for authors easy to find and to understand. They check the originality of manuscripts, choose reviewers who have suitable expertise and no conflict of interest, and explain the review process to the reviewers. Please see the Peer Review Process. |
| Fair play and independence | Editors evaluate manuscripts only for their intellectual content, without regard to the gender, the background, the religion, the nationality, the political views, or other personal characteristics of the authors. They maintain editorial independence. |
| Confidentiality | Editors and the editorial staff do not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, the reviewers, the potential reviewers, the editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate. |
| Data protection | Editors assess possible breaches of data protection and confidentiality, particularly where the manuscript contains information about identifiable people, and they require appropriate consent. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | Editors do not use unpublished material from a submitted manuscript in their own research without the written consent of the author. They disclose their own conflicts of interest, and they do not handle a manuscript in which they have a conflict. |
4Duties of Reviewers
| Topic | Duty |
|---|---|
| Contribution to decisions | Reviewers help the editors to make decisions and, through editorial communication with the authors, help the authors to improve their manuscript. They review honestly and independently. |
| Promptness | A reviewer who feels unqualified to review a manuscript, or who knows that a prompt review will not be possible, tells the editors and declines the invitation. Reviews are usually due within two weeks, and any extension must be agreed with the editorial office. |
| Confidentiality | Reviewers treat a manuscript as a confidential and privileged document. They do not show it to anyone or discuss it with anyone unless the editors authorize this. |
| Standards of objectivity | Reviews are objective, clear, and constructive. Personal criticism of the authors is not acceptable, and the views of the reviewer are supported with arguments. |
| Acknowledgement of sources | Reviewers check that the authors have cited the data sources and the relevant published work. They report to the editors any substantial similarity to other work that they know of, and any irregularity or suspected misconduct. They do not investigate on their own. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | Privileged information that a reviewer obtains through the review is kept confidential and is not used for personal advantage. A reviewer does not review a manuscript in which there is a conflict of interest, for example because of a competitive, collaborative, or other relationship with an author or an institution. |
